June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30: The Insight and Continuing Relevance of Howard Thurman
Howard Thurman (1899-1981) was a minister, chaplain, activist and author, unknown to some Americans, but a theologian whose words nourished and influenced such figures as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Alice Walker. Over four weeks in June via Zoom, we will read and discuss excerpts from his writings revealing Thurman the mystic, community builder, prophet and nonviolent activist, and environmentalist. Rev. Dr. Alan Bentz-Letts is the facilitator.
Week #1: Introduction to Thurman’s life by Luther Smith, and Thurman’s mystic spirituality in selected excerpts
Week #2: selected excerpts by Thurman on the healing of the self and importance of community
Week #3: excerpts from Jesus and the Disinherited
Week #4: environmentalist excerpts and conclusion
