The Sharing Fund

The Sharing Fund

At The Riverside Church, we are deeply committed to making a meaningful impact beyond our walls. Established in response to a pivotal moment on May 4, 1969—when Black activist James Forman stormed the Chancel, challenging churches and synagogues to pay $500,000,000 in reparations—the Sharing Fund reflects our dedication to justice and community empowerment.

Funded by 10% of the church’s annual giving, the Sharing Fund uplifts marginalized voices and supports transformative, community-focused projects that align with our mission. Through this work, we honor our history and continue striving for a more equitable future.

Funding

The Sharing Fund provides grants of up to $5,000.

These grants are intended to make a significant impact on the project or organization.

Funds may be used for either project support or general operating support, but prefer not to cover overhead and administrative expenses not directly tied to program services.

What We Fund

We support organizations/projects that:

Provide services or advocacy for underserved and marginalized communities.

Address issues such as racism, homophobia, sexism, ageism, chronic illness, violence, and economic hardship (e.g., hunger, homelessness, lack of healthcare or education).

Respond to the needs of refugees, victims of natural disasters, prisoners, and those experiencing the consequences of systemic inequalities.

Foster inclusivity and benefit target populations without regard to religious affiliation.
