Put Your Faith Into Action:
Help the People of Haiti

On Saturday, August 14, 2021 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti killing over 1900 people, injuring thousands, displacing many from their homes and destroying their sources of livelihood. The situation is precarious, complicated by hurricane Grace and by political instability. Arelis Figueroa and Ruby Sprott have identified two grassroots organizations that are delivering much needed help to the people of Haiti.

Funtosalud International and Funtosalud Dominicana are coordinating efforts to assist survivors of the August earthquake. They work with Haitians and Dominican Haitians at the Haiti/DR border and the Bateyes. The humanitarian services are free primary medical care, education, food, counseling, healing arts and craft. These organizations have been supported by Riverside’s Latino Ministry and Riverside’s Sharing Fund.

Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees has organized emergency response to the peasant villages in the Southwestern peninsula of Haiti where the earthquake had the most severe impact. The plain of Bakonwa (Plaine de Baconois in the Nippes region) suffered structural damage to houses, roads and irrigation systems that were being developed. These irrigation systems are a crucial attempt to instill sustainable farming in the face of climate change, and they are integral to the livelihood of the community. These efforts often go underserved by large-scale agencies. HWHR has been bringing solidarity support to the people of Haiti since 2004.
