The Glasgow Conference on Climate Change and the Build Back Better Bill

“Faith and Justice are, and must be, Integral to one another…Without justice, faith becomes self-serving, personal and even a private thing..tribal rather than universal. And without faith, justice becomes anger, retribution, revenge and even violence… We will need both.”

–Rev. Jim Wallis at The Riverside Church, October 24, 2021

The Mission and Social Justice Commission calls for your prayers for the UN Glasgow Conference on Climate Change starting on October 31. Pray that the leaders of nations will have the wisdom to save the beautiful and bountiful planet that God has given us, for future generations. Keep your ears open for church bells ringing all across the world on Saturday, October 30 at 6pm ET. They will sound their bells to warn of the danger we face due to global warming.

The Glasgow Conference is the latest in an ongoing intergovernmental effort to deal with the consequences of human activity on global climate. There is pressure for all nations to embark on radical measures to prevent the inevitable catastrophe that awaits us all if we do not drastically reduce carbon emission from coal, oil, and gas. The decade out to 2030 will be crucial. Absent measures to reduce carbon emissions and turn to renewable energy by all nations, we are headed for more climate disasters that Americans have personally experienced recently, and that we have witnessed in other parts of the world.

The Riverside Church exercised its historic prophetic voice in 2017 when it divested from investments in fossil fuels, agreeing to the recommendation of the Beloved Earth Ministry of the Mission and Social Justice Commission. It shows the power of raising our collective voice.

Now you can add your voice to the Church’s efforts and to the voices of people all over the world who are calling for action on global warming.
Please call your representatives to pass the Build Back Better (BBB) bill, which has provisions to change course from the impending global climate catastrophe through reasonable measures – and please add that you want the House and the Senate to also pass measures that protect the health and wellbeing of all Americans, children, families, the elderly, workers and more. BBB contains legislation both on the climate and the “human infrastructure.”
