When my heart is heavy, I walk

Beloveds, my heart is grieving. If you haven’t heard already, a devastating flash flood
occurred on the border of Nepal and China, destroying homes and businesses. The
number of deaths and those missing are climbing. The area impacted is widely visited by
local trekkers, pilgrims and tourists… more than 30 countries have reported nationals
missing or killed. My heart is heavy…
The most likely cause: a glacial collapse from rising temperatures in the Himalayas.
Creation has been subjected to frustration and she is groaning in pain…. Paul in Romans 8,
describes her pain like the pains of childbirth. And I wonder… what will our Mother Earth
birth? Will we sit and wait and argue about whether or not global warming is real as she
continues to birth tragedy and devastation as the fruit of our ignorance (and inaction)? Or
will she birth new possibilities? New life? Another way of living?
I believe our Mother Earth and our Creator seek to co-labor with us to create a better way
for us to live together. But it needs to start with us confronting our broken systems so that
we can pave the way for systemic change.
The One Big (Ugly) Bill Act (HR-1) has put profit over people, resource extraction over
sustainability and punity over restoration. We have to organize to repeal HR-1 and make
moves to drive funding towards restoring our planet and the community.
Will you join me in turning our grief into action and solidarity with our planet and our
neighbors? I would love to see you tomorrow at the Multifaith Climate and Immigration
Justice Pilgrimage.
