On Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM, The Riverside Book Club will gather to delve into the significance of Marlon James’ novel, The Book of Night Women. Against the backdrop of a haunting historical reality outlined by UNESCO, where millions were forced from Africa through the brutal “Middle Passage” to plantations in the Americas, James illuminates a lesser-known aspect: the lives of women in Caribbean communities. Their stories, often overlooked, are brought to vivid life as James portrays them as active agents amidst the horrors of slavery. They rebel, scheme, love, laugh, and cry, forging connections with each other and with their spirituality in profound ways.

The novel, available online, in e-book format, and in paperback, will also be offered at the Riverside Gift Center. Moderating the discussion will be Dr. Vernay Mitchell-McNight and esteemed Riversider and author, Barrington Wright.
