Thorne, exploring the significance of “Beyond Vietnam” and the “Black Manifesto.”
On Sunday May 4, 1969, black activist James Forman stormed the Chancel of The Riverside Church, demanding that white churches and synagogues pay $500,000,000 in reparations. Before Forman could begin to explain the reason for the service interruption, Rev. Dr. Ernest Campbell led a silent walkout of the majority of the congregation. This event threw The Riverside Church and the concept of reparations into the national spotlight.
On Saturday, April 27th, we will celebrate the 55th anniversary of this event featuring an interview with Riverside member Hylda Clarke who was there on that day and Rev. Dr. Bob Polk, the first African American on staff at Riverside. Senior Minister Rev. Adriene Thorne will have a dialogue with Dr. Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies and currently point person for implementation of racial justice amendments to the NYC Charter and we will discuss topics like Affordable Housing as Reparations/Opportunities for Engagement.
