The Hebrew grammatical topics are studied within the framework of selected texts such as Deuteronomy, Exodus, and Leviticus and the students read scriptures in the original Hebrew language. The texts used are all taken from the Bible without modifications. However, bell hooks, in her award-winning trilogy of books on love, raises the question of whether most people understand what true love is. The trilogy first identifies the culturally created, media driven false images of love. Then the books contrasts these false notions with more realistic concepts of love. The result is a beautiful aroma of hope that begins within intimate relationships, and spreads throughout through the world at large. On Saturday, February 11, 2023, the Riverside Book Club will discuss the first of hooks’ trilogy, All About Love: New Visions. The presenter is Rev. Dr. Colleen Birchett, Minister of Curriculum Development at The Riverside Church. The discussion will take place between 11:00am – 12:30pm via ZOOM. Dr. Arnold Isidore Thomas, followed by a musical performance from Irwin Reese and Julia Bady. Hosted by the Business & Professional Women’s Group, Parish Life, and the Music Department. Dr. Arnold Thomas will explore the contours of Black history and the hidden realities of slavery and bigotry in so-called slave-free and progressive-minded Vermont. Rev. Thomas is the pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Jericho, Vermont, and previously served as the Minister of Education, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations at The Riverside Church. Rev. Thomas was the first African American denominational leader in Vermont, serving as the Conference Minister of the Vermont Conference of the UCC. Over time as the types of poetry shared and discussed became more inclusive of subjects, forms and the poetry of cultures worldwide, the group became the "The Riverside Church Poetry Group." Typically, the sessions are guided by themes; however, programs of individual favorites have been scheduled simply for enjoyment and/or discussion. Invited poets have engaged the group in sessions of writing and sharing of inspired outcomes. When time allowed, the group engaged in both discussion of themed offerings as well as writing from prompts.
