Avery is at a legal conference when she is approached by a fellow law clerk who is desperate to learn the truth about the death of his former boss, a federal judge. He gives Avery a file folder and a burner phone. As Avery digs more deeply into the case, she is shocked to discover a frightening pattern involving other federal judges and America’s “secret court.” She fears that something far more sinister may be unfolding inside the nation’s third branch of government. – more sinister than she could ever have imagined, Avery finds herself in a race against time before more lives, and her faith in the country’s judicial system, are lost. 

All of this takes place within an environment that is strikingly similar to that of the current 2024 U.S. presidential campaign. Through the twists and turns of this masterfully crafted plot, author Stacy Abrams manages to ask the question of “What is truth?”, given the reality of: fake news, unauthorized surveillance, threats of cybersecurity and virtual warfare. This thriller is a sequel to her previous novel, When Justice Sleeps.
