Jesus teaches about God’s reign mostly to peasants who, as sociologists tell us, lived in advanced agrarian contexts or Roman Palestine. Are there spiritual and practical lessons to be learned from reading Luke 14:15-24; 16:1-9, and reading Matt 25:14-30/Luke 19:12-27 in our modern context? The good news of God’s reign inspires the kind of spirituality that seeks to empower people of faith to denounce and subvert any forms of economic exploitation.
The class reads Luke 14:15-24, Luke 16:1-9, and Matt 25:14-30/Luke 19:12-27 aloud, analyzes their content and message, and draws concrete spiritual and practical lessons for today. The goal of these sessions is to inspire and empower participants, shaped by Western Capitalism in many ways, to reread sacred texts/scripture critically with a view to denounce and subvert economic exploitation.
