Dismantling Mass Incarceration: The Power of the People

October 22 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Mass incarceration has devastated Black and Latinx communities across New York State for decades, promoting racism, revenge, hatred. The Riverside Church Prison Ministry invites you to join a conversation on ending this damage and promoting healing, forgiveness, and redemption. This is part of the Polls Need Souls series.

You will learn about efforts led by incarcerated people and their families to transform the parole system to promote public health and safety—and justice. You will learn about two Parole Justice measures gaining support in the NYS legislature, the Elder Parole and Fair and Timely Parole Bills. These are two bills that U.S. Senate Majority Leader Schumer called ‘reasonable, common-sense bills,’ which will help to address the systemic racial injustice caused by the racist policies of mass incarceration.  The bills are backed by leading civil rights and crime victim advocacy groups across the state.

Extreme prison sentences, with little or no opportunity for release, have become the new death penalty in NYS, resulting in permanent family separations and inter-generational incarceration for tens of thousands of Black and Latinx families across the State.  Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP) and the Parole Preparation Program are building People Power among directly impacted people and supporters across the state to move legislators and the Governor to act and pass these bills and more. Click here to learn more about the People’s Campaign for Parole Justice, a statewide coalition led by RAPP.

Panelists Anthony Dixon (Parole Prep), Jose Saldana (RAPP Campaign), Roz Smith (RAPP Campaign, V-Day) and Carol Shapiro (former NYS Parole Commissioner, who freed Saldana and Smith) will discuss the bills and answer questions.

The event will feature a screening of “The Interview,” a moving short documentary about the NYS parole process that invites viewers to confront their own feelings about justice and mercy.

Please Note: Lunch will be provided during this event. To reserve a box lunch, RSVP by Tuesday, October 18, 2022 end-of-day. Thank you!
