Join farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for an update on their struggle against wage theft and violence, including sexual violence, in the fields. Their efforts include a boycott of Wendy’s, which to date is the only major fast-food corporation to refuse to join the CIW’s Fair Food Program. Riverside’s Church Council has endorsed the Wendy’s boycott, and our church has an ongoing relationship with the CIW farmworkers, hosting them at church and participating in demonstrations.
CIW members pick the vegetables used by fast-food restaurants. The Fair Food Program vastly improves farmworkers’ working and living conditions at the minuscule cost of a penny per pound of tomatoes picked. The United Nations recognizes the Fair Food Program as the benchmark for ensuring farmworkers’ human rights. The farmworkers will share ways we can support their efforts – including by joining their rally beginning at 5:00 pm.
