POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN INFORMATION SESSION

Due to COVID-19, the Mass Poor People’s Assembly & Moral March on Washington June 20, 2020, won’t happen physically in Washington, D.C., but it won’t be postponed or canceled, either – it’s going digital!

Join Poor People’s Campaign Co-Chair Liz Theoharis by videoconference at 1 p.m. this Sunday, March 29, for discussion of mobilization for the June 20, 2020, Poor People’s Virtual Mass Assembly. Learn more about this generationally transformative event and how Riverside Church and other organizations can get more involved.

Our strategy for building a long-term moral fusion movement has not changed. Indeed, this global pandemic makes our work ever more urgent. We must bring together poor and low-wealth people, religious leaders & advocates to lift up the 140 million who are being abandoned in the midst of abundance. We must continue to organize at this critical moment to shift the moral narrative, build power, and impact elections and policies.

Update: Tuesday, March 10

Friends,

As we continue to monitor and respond to the ongoing public health crisis we want to share with you some precautions we are taking to ensure the safety of everyone in our community.

The Education Commission has unanimously decided that all in-person education programming will be on hiatus until further notice. This includes Bible study, adult small groups, youth group, Sunday morning church school for all ages, and the Living Lent Together retreat. The Faith Formation team is developing ways to provide online education classes and programming during this time, allowing our community to stay connected and continue to deepen our faith formation. Additionally, the Riverside Tower League will meet this Thursday, March 12 for regularly scheduled programs, and will prepare to go on hiatus beginning the following week.

Our weekly worship services will continue as scheduled except for Morning Light on Sunday at 8:30 am. Morning Light Services are on hiatus until further notice — Space for Grace will continue on Wednesday’s at 7:00 pm, and Sunday morning worship at 11:00 am — however we encourage older adults, people with a compromised immune system, and anyone who feels uncomfortable gathering in large groups to stay home and worship online. Our Sunday morning worship livestream is available through Facebook Live, youtube, and  on our website. And if you do choose to gather in person for worship, we ask that you practice social distancing, maintaining intentional space of at least six feet and avoiding physical contact with others. (Click here for more information about the social distancing.) And above all else, wash your hands!

If you have any questions about specific programs or meetings, we encourage you to contact commission chairs and staff liaisons for more information. We will continue to share updates on our website and social media channels about what we are doing to mitigate the spread of this virus and we ask you to join us with your prayers and your actions as care for ourselves and the world around us.

Rest assured that the Riverside clergy, commissions, and Church Council will continue to monitor this situation and respond as needed. Our operations team continues to clean and sanitize meeting spaces throughout the building. Stay informed by reading the latest updates from the New York State Department of Health and NYC Health. Be sure to follow the CDC for official updates on the status of COVID-19 in your area and always take the following precautions:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid shaking hands. Instead wave or bump elbows.
  • Monitor your health more closely than usual for cold and flu symptoms.
  • Stay home and call your doctor if you have symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, fever, or sore throat.
  • If you have chronic conditions like lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer or a weakened immune system, avoid unnecessary gatherings and events.

More than anything else, know that God is with us, especially in times like this. When you feel anxious, stop and breathe and know that God is as close as your very breath. When you feel calm and collected, continue to breathe and know that God is as close as your very breath. And if you are in need of prayer or support, Riverside’s clergy team is always here for you.

Grace and Peace,
Rev. Michael Livingston
Interim Senior Minister
